Alquife

For this reddish earthy color from our Tierra collection, we have borrowed the name of the town of Alquife, west of the province of Granada. This town has one of the largest open-pit iron mines in Europe, which was active until the end of the 20th century, and a history linked to mining that dates back at least to Roman times. The abundant presence of the mineral in the Alquife area (and the remains of the now abandoned mining activity, which has very uniquely shaped the landscape around the village) gives the earth its recognizable coppery red color.

Combined with the characteristic light of Eastern Andalusia, this creates a unique and unmistakable landscape, comprising a whole range of ferrous and bronze tones. We wanted to pay tribute to this little-known jewel of our natural heritage with a high-temperature fired clay tone that captures the rich nuances of Alquife through its color variations, produced naturally and inevitably by the firing process itself.
